The Once and Future King
It’s done!! If you are interested: here are all the five parts in separate posts (without the text).
Now to why I chose those five objects:
Well, first, the boring explanation: I had to be able to make letters (at least sort of) out of them, so, yeah.
Now, the more interesting explanation:
Excalibur: Well, it is obviously very closely connected to Arthur, but also definitely a link between Arthur and Merlin. This version says ‘Cast me away’ in Futhark Runes, in case you are interested.
The Royal Seal: Again, the connection to Arthur Pendragon is quite obvious. But it is also connected to Guinevere, the Once and Future Queen. I know some fans felt cheated by this … argumentation, that by making Gwen Queen and making her his successor, Arthur brought around the Golden Age of Camelot in a sort of round about way, but I somehow like it and thus also this way of adding Gwen to the mix.
Merlin’s Scarf: It’s the ultimate symbol for Merlin in this series and this fandom and I liked having Merlin as the piece that connects the Once and the Future Arthur. My headcanon after all is that Merlin waited for Arthur’s Return and that thus, once Arthur returned, he had Merlin in both incarnations - as the piece that holds the two together.
Arthur’s Comb: *whispers* I had to get a F out of something… But the fannish explanation is that Merlin kept Arthur’s comb over the centuries and over time, the comb lost most of its teeth, but Merlin still kept it, because it reminded him of Arthur.
Arthur’s Crown: There’s not much to say here: The symbolism is quite obvious…
So, that’s it, my reasoning behind this series. It is finally finished! It was a lot of fun but also a lot of work. I didn’t think I’d finish it in time for Christmas.
So, here you have it, Merlin fandom! I’m just sorry this became such a huge post after all…
